Getting a new patio installed for this summer is the perfect way to get more use out of your garden, no matter the size.

A patio is often the focal part of a garden, it where all the fun happens, and if designed and installed properly it can become one of the most beautiful places in your home.

There's no better way to appreciate your garden and nature when sitting outside on your patio, but it makes it a lot better when it looks amazing too.

Patios aren't just made of square paving stones anymore (although modern patios are just as quick and easy to install!).

Here’s a few things to consider when planning your new patio:

Its position and privacy

The area right at the back of your home, normally just outside the back door tends to be the most private part of the garden, but not all garden layouts are the same. Take a look at your garden and surrounding neighbours to see where would be best to place your patio.

Having it close to the back door makes it easier to bring food in and out the house when you're having a meal outside, which is what most patios are used for.

If your garden is on looked by neighbours and privacy is an issue, the use of a trellis or pergola is a great way to do this as well as being very stylish and offering some shade too.

Purpose and size of the patio

What will the main use of the patio be? This may seem like a silly question but some people get caught up in the process of choosing materials and furniture that they forget this big detail.

Will it be used as a cosy area for two people to chill out in the evening? Or a space needed for the whole family to hang out and eat? Or if you regularly have friends over you may use it as an entertaining space?

You don’t want to spend money on a patio that is too small. Usually, a patio that is 3x3 meters is a good size for a family of four to 6 people, but a patio used for just two people can afford to be a little smaller.

You may want to consider keeping the patio small if you can overspill onto the lawn. This is a great idea when you will be just using it for a few people most of the time but have the option to have space for more people. If this is the case, then make sure the patio is open and not enclosed by borders or big flower beds.
